The Explore - Exploit Tradeoff
Many of the problems we solve in our lives combine a knowledge component and a skill component. We believe this applies to the careers we pursue as well. At the Cambridge Education Consultation Group, we guide students as they balance their time and effort between exploring career choices and exploiting their passions to develop a relevant skillset.
Explore Knowledge
(25-40%)
When students first join the Cambridge Education Consultation Group, we encourage them to explore different career paths and understand what kinds of problems exist out there in the world for them to solve.
Through this process, students develop better understanding of how they can fit into different careers, and therefore are positioned to develop passion for certain
fields of study and work. Generally speaking, we allocate about 25-40% of the total amount of time available with us for students to explore different career paths.
Exploit Passion
(60-75%)
As students develop interest and passion for different career paths, we start focusing their time and effort towards developing skillsets relevant to these career paths.
Depending on their interest, we build specifically tailored and flexible plans for our students so that they can begin to spend significant time building the basic knowledge base, networking to develop relationships, and interning/volunteering to gain experience in their fields of interest.
Generally speaking, we allocate about 60-75% of the total amount of time available with the students doing this.
